Tartar threatens the health of teeth and gums, but also presents an aesthetic problem.
We find:
– supragingival tartar (visible on the teeth)
– subgingival tartar (along the root)
Tartar is calcified dental plaque produced from minerals contained in saliva.
Tartar is rough and porous. It allows the retention of new plaque, which in turn will calcify and increase the existing layer of tartar.
It is the accumulation of tartar that creates gingival lesions, by promoting inflammation. Bleeding of the gums is increasingly significant, causing bone lesions which lead to tooth mobility and halitosis (bad breath) develops; This is periodontal disease: periodontitis .

Periodontal sanitation treatment:
Periodontal sanitation coupled with oral hygiene education is the first-line treatment for all patients with periodontal disease.
The treatment generally requires several sessions.
It includes the following procedures:
– Scaling
– Curettage / debridement of periodontal pockets using curettes and/or ultrasound
– Surfacing (under local anesthesia)
– Antiseptic irrigation
– Drug treatment: local antiseptic and/or antibiotic if necessary
Expected result: preservation of teeth by cleaning the periodontium (bone and gum surrounding the tooth) and improvement in quality of life.
Therapeutic education of the patient:
Patient motivation is essential to control periodontal infection and avoid recurrence.
It includes:
-Learning oral hygiene: teaching a brushing technique and prescribing suitable instruments for each patient: toothbrush, interdental brushes , dental floss , mouthwash and toothpaste.
-Healthy lifestyle advice (stop smoking, reduce sugar consumption, etc.)
Maintaining the results obtained:
To maintain the benefit of the treatment, maintenance periodontal therapy consisting of very regular cleanings and scaling must be implemented. This maintenance lasts a lifetime and must be followed with the greatest care. This is probably the most important phase of treatment.
- The outcome of periodontal treatment depends a lot on your participation.
- Indeed, the quality of daily oral hygiene control plays a vital role in success against these diseases.
- Tobacco reduces the success of periodontal treatments.
